James Assiniboine was born in 1959 in Portage la Prairie to Rosemary and James Assiniboine. He attended a residential from the ages of 5 through 12. He lived in Winnipeg for a time but for the last 30 years he has lived on the Long Plain First Nation Reserve in Manitoba, Canada.
