Or colonization. In this sense, refers to Western European countries' historical immigration and settlement on land mainly in the Americas, Africa, Asia and Oceania. Colonies helped monetarily support the country which they represented, though immigrants had differing reasons for leaving their home country as time went on. It most often involved (sometimes forcibly) assimilating the indigenous peoples into the colonizing culture.
