Root River is in Fillmore County Root River, more fully noticed in the first chapter, is translated from the Dakota name Hokah, both being used on Joseph N. Nicollet's map in 1843. This river may be said to be formed by the union of its North and Middle Branches in Chatfield Township. A mile and a half below Lanesboro it receives the South Branch. Another large southern affluent, called the South Fork of Root River, drains southeastern Fillmore County and joins the main stream in Houston County. Hear Hokah pronounced in Dakota.
